New York New York

When I was a freshman at RHS, I was constantly late to my Favorite Teacher's class, her name was M(r?)s. Teeples and every consecutive day I was late it would get more awkward when I would walk in. She would like to take time and criticize those late for class each day. Well that sure made me want to get there on time. One day I rushed out of Seminary (a mormon class on teachings of the Book of Mormon and Holy Bible) I got there with time to spare and I was so excited to show her that I was able to get there on time. I looked up at her triumphantly and said Teacher, I am on time! She gave me an awkward glance and continued to work on whatever it was she was working on. This confused me a bit and (in a half joking voice) I said, Well, aren't you going to congratulate me or something?

The next thing she said is something I will never forget for the rest of my life.

"Scott, Why would I congratulate you for accomplishing something I expect from you every day you are apart of my class?"

Today New York legalized and approved a gay marriage law that would make it legal for homosexual men and women to get married in that United State.

Politics, Why would I congratulate you for accomplishing something I expect from you every day I am apart of your great country?

The people who deserve a congratulations are the men and women who are so valiantly fighting (and those blessed souls who have) for Queer America's Rights as human beings and as citizens of this land. So to the other 40+ states who are falling sluggishly behind the changing times of our country, realize that when you legalize and pass these same bills please don't expect me to congratulate you but to simply sigh and say about time.

ps: I would like it to be known that i am very happy and proud for all the men and women who have fought for these kinds of bills, I am not being negative towards them I am being negative that love is actually something that needs to be rallied, cheered and fought for.

  1. I definitely agree that it is something that should have happened long ago. Although I do believe that a few of the voters should be recognized. The three (I think) republicans who voted for the bill did so despite their party threatening them. Which I think takes a lot of courage. That being said, it does feel easier to say "it's about time" rather than "congrats." And what you said about congratulating those who fight for our rights was spot on. Love it. Thanks Scotty.
